Circle Conference was given to Katalin Munkácsy, associate professor
of the Mathematics Teaching and Education Centre,
by the Presidium of the National Science Circle Council.

09/07/2011: The Hungarian Academy of Sciences launched a call for fundings
of research groups for the next 5 years. Of the 164 groups which applied,
42 received support.
Among the three research groups that are supported in mathematics, is the
Egerváry Research Group on
Combinatorial Optimization of our Institute.

08/25/2011: On the International Mathematics
Competition for University Students 2011, held in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria,
László Miklós Lovász reached the second best score and received Grand First
Prize. Of the other members of our team, Dániel Korándi, Dániel Nagy,
and István Tomon also received First Prize, while Csaba Nagy Second Prize.
Our team reached the third place after the Jagiellonian University,
Krakow and the Taras Shevcehnko National University, Kyiv. The team was
led by Péter Pál Pach. Selection and coaching of team members was done
by Tamás Keleti and Géza Kós.

WebGraph Server at the web address
webgraph.org. The
cooperative project makes large, constantly updated graphs accessible,

The ELTE team finished as 7th at the 2010
International Mathematics Competition
for University Students, which taken place at Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria.
First prize winners are László Lovász jr, Csaba Nagy, and István Tomon.
Dániel Korándi, Dániel Nagy, and Bence Borda won second prizes. In the final
list of participants Lovász was the 16th, Csaba Nagy the 17th.

The team of ELTE (Dániel Korándi , Gergely Gábor Nagy,
Balázs Szalkai, secondyear students at mathematics BSc.,
Zsolt Borsi, leader, Faculty of Inormatics, ELTE) won the KPIOpen
international programming contest among 83 participating teams of seven
countries in Kiev, 510 July, 2010. The ELTE team was the only one to
solve all problems.

29/10/09: András Gács, associate professor of the Department of Computer
Science, passed away. He was 41.

10/10/2009: József Pelikán and Katalin Vesztergombi,
along with Ákos Egyed, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences,
and Marianne Rozsondai, fellow of the Library of the HAS,
received
the Bolyai Prize of the János Bolyai Fund, to be given to heads of public
collections and creators of special publications, since 2001.

The
16th International Mathematics Competition
was held in our university. Concerning the final results the Eötvös University's
team reached the illustrious 4th place among the 65 participant teams.
Among the First Prize winners were Roland Paulin, László Lovász, Csaba Nagy,
Balázs Strenner and Bence Borda.

László Lovász was elected an honorary member of the London Mathematical
Society in appreciation of his influence on the development of graph
theory, combinatorics, and theoretical computer science, on July, 3, 2009.
The praise also mentions Lovász's public activities, including his work as
president of the IMU (International Mathematical Union).

László Lovász gets Széchenyi Grand Prize of Hungary

(2007) Professor András Szűcs received the Tibor Szele
Memorial Medal of the János Bolyai Society as an
appreciation of his creation of a scientific school.

László Lovász received the 2007 János Bolyai Research Prize, the most
prestigious civil award for scientific research in Hungary. The previous
recipients are: Tamás Freund, biologist (2000), Tamás Roska, informatician
(2002), Zsolt Bor, physicist (2004).
